Eat & drink · Were Street

Coffee, long lunches and a hill full of gum trees

Were Street climbs from the station up to the old windmill, and most of Monty's eating and drinking happens along the way. Tables spill onto the footpath, the coffee is good, and you are looking out over gum trees the whole time.

Cafes worth the climb

A few local favourites

Were St Food Store

A boutique cafe that has fed Monty for more than twenty years. The lasagna has a bit of a following, there is fresh baking in the cabinet each day, and they do gluten and dairy free without any fuss.

30 Were St

Espresso 3094

Named after the postcode and almost always busy. A bright room with a courtyard out the back, a big cabinet of cakes and slices, and a menu that moves with the seasons. Prams welcome, and there are usually a few about.

44 Were St

Were St Window

A coffee window run out of Were St Trading. Handy when you just want a takeaway flat white and cannot be bothered finding a table.

For something more than coffee, Max's Burger Lounge sits up the top near the windmill, the Grape & Hop is a snug little wine and craft beer bar, and there is a Thai restaurant, a pizza place and the obligatory fish and chip shop. The traders also run live music and street events through the year, like Music in the Park, so the strip is often busier than its size would suggest.

Listings stay current Hospitality moves fast. In a live build, each venue would be a maintained listing with hours, a map pin and a link, refreshed regularly, plus a way for locals to suggest somewhere new.
